Formation and use

Formation
Hydrothermal vein mineral in low-temperature ore deposits and a product of the oxidation of manganese ore.
Uses
Manganese ore for steel and aluminium alloys; banded material is used as ornamental stone and in jewelry, while faceting is rare because of softness and cleavage.
Stability and care
Soft with perfect cleavage, so specimens and cut stones are easily damaged and need gentle handling.
